Your First Visit

Your First Visit

We are excited to meet you. Whether it’s your first time visiting Full Heart Dentistry or just haven’t been in for an appointment in a while, here is what you can expect at your appointment.

Z

Exam

During the exam, Dr. Smith or Dr. Hernandez will inspect your teeth and mouth for any potential problems, including signs of tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease). They will also check existing dental work to make sure it is in good condition. The doctor will review with your any concerns you may be having, such as toothaches, sensitivity, or cosmetic concerns.

Following the dental exam, if you have dental needs that need to be addressed, Dr. Smith or Dr. Hernandez will put together an individual treatment plan designed to get your smile in tip-top shape.

Oral Health Screenings

Your face, lips, cheeks, gums, tongue and the area below your tongue will be checked for any signs of oral cancer. Your gums will be checked for any red, swollen or sore spots. If your gums were bleeding during cleaning, this is an early sign of gum disease and we will talk with you about how you can address it with better at-home care.

X-Rays

Unless another dentist office has shared your dental records, your first dental appointment will almost certainly include new X-rays. We utilize modern digital X-rays, which reduce radiation up to 90%.
Bitewing X-rays are taken and used to detect tooth decay (cavities), gum disease, bone loss, and infection, while panoramic X-rays (sometimes referred to as “pan”) are used to check for impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, tumors, and more.

Periodontal Probing

A periodontal probe is a thin round tipped instrument with measuring lines along it and is placed in the space between your tooth and gums. The primary purpose of a periodontal probe is to measure pocket depths around a tooth in order to establish the state of health of the gums. This information is used to determine what type of dental cleaning you will require as well as frequency of recall appointments.
